The Blessings We Overlook: A Reminder to Be Grateful

March 8th, 2025

We are surrounded by countless blessings every day, yet we often take them for granted. From the air we breathe to the ability to see, hear, and walk—these are gifts from Allah that many do not have. Gratitude opens the doors to more blessings and deepens our connection with our Creator.

The Blessings We Take for Granted

We often assume that the things we have today will always be there tomorrow. Our health, family, home, and even the ability to wake up in the morning are blessings that millions of people around the world long for. If we were to reflect deeply, we would realise that nothing is guaranteed except what Allah wills. The Prophet ﷺ taught us to appreciate even the smallest blessings, as they too are from Allah’s mercy.

What If We Woke Up with Only What We Thanked Allah for Yesterday?

Imagine waking up one day to find that everything you failed to thank Allah for had disappeared. This thought-provoking idea reminds us of the importance of daily gratitude. The next time we enjoy a meal, feel the warmth of the sun, or experience a moment of happiness, we should pause and say, Alhamdulillah—all praise is due to Allah.

How to Thank Allah for Our Blessings

Thanking Allah goes beyond just saying Alhamdulillah—it involves using His blessings in a way that pleases Him. Here are some ways to express gratitude:

  • Recognising the Blessing – Acknowledge that everything we have is from Allah.

  • Using the Blessing Wisely – If we are blessed with wealth, we should spend it in charity. If we have knowledge, we should share it.

  • Obeying Allah – True gratitude is shown through our actions. Praying, fasting, and following His guidance are all ways to thank Him.

Virtues of Being Grateful for Our Blessings

Gratitude is one of the best ways to increase blessings. Allah says in the Quran:

"If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more. But if you are ungrateful, surely My punishment is severe."
The Quran
| Chapter 14, Verse 7

The Prophet ﷺ also emphasised the importance of gratitude, teaching that a grateful heart leads to contentment and inner peace. Those who sincerely thank Allah experience joy and satisfaction, regardless of their circumstances.

The Blessing of Hardships and Trials

While we often think of blessings as material comforts, hardships can also be blessings in disguise. Through trials, Allah purifies us, strengthens our faith, and draws us closer to Him. The Prophet ﷺ said:

"The greatest reward comes with the greatest trial. When Allah loves a people, He tests them."
Tirmidhi 2396

Difficult moments teach us patience, resilience, and reliance on Allah. They remind us that even in hardship, there is mercy, and with every difficulty, there is ease.

Final Thoughts

Gratitude is not just a feeling but a way of life. When we appreciate what we have, we find peace and contentment. Let us make it a habit to thank Allah daily and use our blessings wisely so that they remain a source of goodness for us in this life and the next.
