Uzair

The story of Prophet Uzair (Ezra) is briefly mentioned in the Quran, specifically in Surah At-Tawbah (Chapter 9), verse 30.

The Jews say, “Ezra is the son of Allah,” while the Christians say, “The Messiah is the son of Allah.” Such are their baseless assertions, only parroting the words of earlier disbelievers. May Allah condemn them! How can they be deluded ˹from the truth˺?

During the time of Prophet Uzair, the Israelites faced a period of hardship and turmoil. Many of their scriptures had been lost or corrupted, and they were in need of guidance and divine revelation.

Prophet Uzair was a pious and knowledgeable servant of Allah who was entrusted with the task of preserving and restoring the sacred scriptures of the Israelites. He devoted himself to this task diligently, transcribing and safeguarding the divine teachings.

However, over time, some of the Israelites began to venerate Prophet Uzair to an excessive degree, elevating him to the status of a divine figure or the "son of God." This idolatrous belief contradicted the fundamental teachings of monotheism and the oneness of Allah.

When Prophet Uzair heard about this distortion of his status and the misinterpretation of his role, he was deeply troubled. He denounced the false beliefs attributed to him and reaffirmed the absolute oneness and sovereignty of Allah.

The Quran mentions Prophet Uzair in the context of refuting the idolatrous beliefs of the People of the Book (Jews and Christians) who had deviated from the true monotheistic faith. The verse emphasises the importance of adhering to the pure and unadulterated teachings of the prophets and maintaining the integrity of divine revelation.

Overall, while the story of Prophet Uzair in the Quran is brief, it underscores the importance of preserving the authenticity of divine scriptures and the dangers of idolatry and deviating from the true monotheistic faith.
