The Parable of the Rainstorm – Hypocrisy and Fear of Truth
In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:19-20), Allah presents a powerful analogy comparing hypocrites to a group caught in a violent rainstorm. This parable illustrates how hypocrites fluctuate between moments of belief and disbelief, responding to divine guidance only when it suits them, much like people navigating through flashes of lightning in a storm.
The Analogy in the Quran
Allah says:
Context of the Parable
This parable describes the hypocrites (munāfiqūn)—those who claim to believe in Islam but do not truly commit to it. They are compared to people caught in a violent rainstorm, struggling to navigate through darkness, thunder, and lightning.
The storm symbolises divine revelation, which contains both guidance (lightning) and warnings (thunder). Hypocrites react fearfully and inconsistently to these elements, exposing their lack of sincerity.
Key Elements of the Analogy
Darkness, Thunder, and Lightning – The Uncertainty of Hypocrisy
The darkness represents doubt and confusion.
The thunder represents warnings from divine revelation, which hypocrites fear but do not truly heed.
The lightning represents moments of clarity, where they briefly recognise the truth but fail to commit to it.
Pressing Their Fingers in Their Ears – Avoiding the Truth
Just as frightened people cover their ears from thunder, hypocrites try to avoid the warnings of faith.
They fear the consequences of divine commands but do not fully accept them.
Walking in the Flash of Lightning – Selective Obedience
When lightning flashes, they walk forward, meaning they follow Islam when it benefits them.
However, when darkness returns, they stand still, meaning they stop following faith when it becomes difficult.
This reveals their inconsistent commitment—they accept what is easy but reject what requires sacrifice.
The Warning in the Parable
The passage ends with a serious warning:
This means that if they continue rejecting faith, Allah may permanently take away their ability to perceive the truth, leaving them in total misguidance.
Final Thoughts
The Parable of the Rainstorm teaches that true faith requires trust in Allah in both ease and difficulty. Hypocrites are likened to those walking only when lightning flashes, but stopping in darkness—symbolising selective belief. A sincere believer follows the truth even when the path is uncertain and does not retreat when faith requires effort.
