The Parable of the Blind on the Day of Judgement – Turning Away from the Reminder

In Surah Ta-Ha (20:124–127), Allah presents a powerful parable for those who ignore divine guidance. It describes the fate of a person who wilfully turns away from Allah’s reminder in this life and is raised blind on the Day of Judgement. This blindness is not a loss of physical vision but a reflection of their spiritual state, marked by arrogance, denial, and deep regret.

The Analogy in the Quran

Allah says:

“But whoever turns away from My Reminder will certainly have a miserable life, then We will raise them up blind on the Day of Judgment.' They will cry, 'My Lord! Why have You raised me up blind, although I used to see?' Allah will respond, 'It is so, just as Our revelations came to you and you neglected them, so Today you are neglected.' This is how We reward whoever transgresses and does not believe in the revelations of their Lord. And the punishment of the Hereafter is far more severe and more lasting.”

Context of the Parable

This parable was revealed in the Makkan period at a time when many disbelievers persistently denied the message of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). It speaks to anyone who deliberately turns away from the Quran after being shown the truth. The image of being raised blind reflects a spiritual condition where a person chooses to ignore divine light in this world and is therefore left in darkness in the next.

It serves as a deep reminder of personal accountability and the consequences of rejecting truth knowingly.

    This blindness symbolises the loss of spiritual insight and deliberate rejection of truth in the worldly life

    The person asks, "Why have You raised me up blind although I used to see?"
    It is a moment of painful awareness that they have lost what they once had because they did not value it

  4. Allah’s Response
    Allah says, "Just as Our revelations came to you and you neglected them, so Today you are neglected"
    This shows a just response. Those who abandon divine mercy are now left without it.

    The punishment in the Hereafter is described as more severe and more lasting
    It underlines the seriousness of rejecting faith and the consequences that follow

The Warning in the Parable

This parable offers a stark warning to anyone who turns away from Allah’s guidance. The punishment is not only physical blindness but spiritual abandonment. To be forgotten by Allah is the worst fate that can befall a person, and it is the result of a conscious choice to ignore His signs.

The parable reminds us that true blindness is not about the eyes but about the heart. If we reject the Quran and close our hearts to its message, we may find ourselves without light in the Hereafter. This is the time to reflect and return to Allah's reminder while the door of mercy is still open.
